Over the past year, the sfSoundSeries has been presenting a unique mix
of new music: composed and improvised - acoustic and electronic - new
works from bay area composers and classic works from the european
avant-garde - virtuosic performances and radical reinterpretations. In
this concluding concert of our first season we combine all of these
aspects into a single event!
Luciano Berio (1925-2003) was one of the extraordinary voices of the
Darmstadt generation. Perhaps the most historically-minded member of
that group, some of his greatest compositions are postmodern collages
and recontextualizations of older works (including Mahler's 2nd
Symphony in "Sinfonia" and Schubert's unfinished Tenth Symphony in
"Rendering").
Drawing inspiration from Berio's own interpretation of music history,
the musicians of the sfSoundGroup have devised a creative, yet
appropriate way to pay homage to the late and great italian master.
Following performances of some of Berio's virtuosic chamber and solo
compositions, the sfSoundGroup presents a new large-scale collaborative
work that recontextualizes Berio's music inside one of his own
theatrical pieces, "Laborintus II". Reorchestrated, reshaped, reduced,
remixed, repulsed, and recomposed, material from over 25 compositions
has been interwoven with one of Berio's most experimental works [ first
performed at Mills College in 1967 ] to form something both unique and
contemporary.
