Other Minds launches BRINK: Other-Minded Music
A monthly performance series at Hemlock Tavern in San Francisco
Curated by Bernard Francis Kyle and David Katznelson
The July 27th show will feature Matt Ingalls, Core of the Coal Man, and the Commode Minstrels.

Matt Ingalls will perform his "Improvisation for Clarinet,” a continually developing work employing techniques such as circular breathing, in which the timbres and textures are uniquely brittle and "electronic." In addition, Ingalls structures rhythmic and formal elements in a way that clearly resembles computer music: His solo improvisations often contain glitches and interruptions, or offer a number of simultaneous musical ideas that are then cut up, rearranged, or "windowed" in a method similar to granular synthesis and phase-vocoding algorithms.

Jorge Boehringer will perform as Core of the Coal Man, a solo exploration incorporating viola, voice, computer, and electronics consisting of various devices purchased, built, or modified. Blending a background in classical viola and composition, a voice he was often discouraged to use as a child, a Jawa's appreciation of electronic technology, insatiable curiosity, and an intense appreciation for the geology of sound, the Coal Man creates a world of landforms for the audience to locate themselves within, without map or compass.

Matt Ingalls
is a clarinetist, composer, improviser, concert producer, and computer musician from Oakland. As a programmer, he has worked for Bay Area computer music companies such as Cycling 74, Bias, Arboretum, and MuscleFish, and he is the developer of MacCsound, a real-time Macintosh version of the classic music-synthesis program, Csound (MacCsound won a 2005 Editor's Choice Award from Electronic Musician Magazine). Matt is also the founder and co-producer of sfSound, a new-music series, ensemble, and Internet radio station devoted to surveying American experimental music, performance art, live electronic music, Bay Area composition, and the various facets of contemporary improvisation.

Jorge Boehringer has produced numerous live musical works for large and small ensembles of electronic and acoustic instruments and voices, as well as solo works with himself as performer, video pieces, installations involving light, space, and sound, music for dance performances, a series of drawings and paintings, book projects, and graphic design objects. A former co-curator of the annual Music For People and Thigamajigs Festival, he currently co-curates the Curious F performance series, among other shows. Jorge has also performed with the sfSound ensemble, experimental noise band Tori Anus, the Brown Bunny Ensemble, the Bilge/Radiolaria Collective, and currently with George Chen in the duo USOUTOFOURUTERUS!, as well as Treehugger. He performs solo as both sevencentralandmountain and Core of the Coal Man.

The Commode Minstrels in Bullface have released an LP, “Forbidden Picnic,” and three seven-inch singles, and have produced several movies, including Book of Kills, Remarmalator, Synthspysizer: The Allies Secret Weapon Project, and Mexican Dog Fight. If you can imagine Evil Dead II playing against some spaghetti western music, with a grafted brain from the year 3000 conducting finger-lightning, then this is your ideal show!

ABOUT HEMLOCK TAVERN
Hemlock Tavern is located at 1131 Polk Street, between Post and Sutter, one block east of Van Ness Avenue. Hemlock features a newly expanded live music performance room, physically separate from the main bar, which was originally designed by studio recording engineers and underwent a renovation and expansion in January 2005. While retaining much of its beloved intimacy and charm, the room is now a somewhat bigger, and all-around improved, version of itself with a new 16' x 10' stage. The Hemlock Tavern received the 2004 SF Weekly award for "Best Intimate Venue."
