BRINK: Other-Minded Music series
presents Brian Sacawa and Dorsey Dunn


Wednesday, September 28, 9:30 pm, at Hemlock Tavern in San Francisco

San Francisco, CA (September 3, 2005) - BRINK: Other-Minded Music, a new monthly concert series by Other Minds, presents performances by saxophonist Brian Sacawa and San Francisco-based artist Dorsey Dunn on Wednesday, September 28, at Hemlock Tavern (1131 Polk St., San Francisco; 21 and over only; $7 cover). Sacawa will present a set of electro-acoustic music by uncompromising experimental composers Alvin Lucier, James Tenney, and Keeril Makan, and Dunn will perform electro-acoustic pieces based on live manipulation of sampled instruments and voices.

Brian Sacawa engages audiences through a live, unfolding process that combines electronics, found sound, and improvisation, whether with an amplified electric light, cumulative 12-second tape delay, or multi-layered timbres produced solely by the saxophonist. Praised by the New York Times as "an inventive musician," "fresh and surprising," and "vividly lyrical," he has firmly established himself as an important contemporary voice for his instrument. Named Baltimore City Paper "Critics' Choice" for classical music in 2002 for his evocative and engaging performances of music by Karlheinz Stockhausen and Luciano Berio, Sacawa has premiered over forty new works by both established and emerging composers, including Philip Glass, Michael Gordon, Bright Sheng, Jo Kondo, Beata Moon, Ken Ueno, Hillary Zipper, and David T. Little. With percussionist Timothy Feeney, Sacawa is the co-founder of the new music duo Non-Zero. He has recorded for the Innova, Naxos, Equilibrium, BiBimBop, and Arizona University Recordings record labels, and currently serves on the faculty at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

Dorsey Dunn's work in sound, text, and image--in the form of installations, performances, and written and recorded works--is an extended meditation on the perimeters of language, the movements of silence, and the vagaries of comprehension. Language, whether in speech, vocal texture, or other sound, is an important component of his work, as are considerations of memory, spatial presence, and will. Raised in East Asia and a veteran of many cities, Dunn performs and exhibits his music and sound installations in the U.S. and Europe regularly. He has scored and produced music for film, theater, and dance. His latest score, for the film IPO, appeared at the Slamdance and Cinequest film festivals in spring 2004, and opened the Film Arts Festival in San Francisco last fall. During 2005 he has provided sound design and music for productions at the Flea Theater in Tribeca, New York, and Theater Artaud in San Francisco. Previously, he edited an international literary magazine, Trafika, based in Prague and New York. Launched on April 27, 2005, BRINK: Other-Minded Music is a monthly concert series providing an intimate setting for performances by local, national, and international musicians and composers, with a focus on music experimentation. Held at Hemlock Tavern's recently renovated, 100-person capacity performance space near downtown San Francisco, the series reflects Other Minds' commitment to the world community of composers and sound artists, and presents a new opportunity for developing "other-minded" artists, as well as artists seeking a more intimate forum to congregate and perform their works. Curated by Other Minds Program Director Bernard Francis Kyle and board member David Katznelson, along with guest curators, the series runs the last Wednesday of every month at 9:30 p.m.

ABOUT HEMLOCK TAVERN
Hemlock Tavern is located at 1131 Polk Street, between Post and Sutter, one block east of Van Ness Avenue. Hemlock features a newly expanded live music performance room, physically separate from the main bar, which was originally designed by studio recording engineers and underwent a renovation and expansion in January 2005. While retaining much of its beloved intimacy and charm, the room is now a somewhat bigger, and all-around improved, version of itself with a new 16' x 10' stage. The Hemlock Tavern received the 2004 SF Weekly award for "Best Intimate Venue."
