Program 678: Five New Releases

In this program, we focus on 5 new albums from 5 very different experimental musicians. There is no particular theme that ties these artists together, other than they are all doing experimental work, and they are all currently active recording artists. We start with a few tracks from the latest album by Egyptian guitarist and composer, Maurice Louca, called, “Saet El Hazz,” or “The Luck Hour.” His work combines combines Egyptian folk instruments, classical western instruments and electronics in an intriguing synthesis of Arabic and Western sensibilities. Pamela Z offers a theatrical and innovative take on the voice and it’s possibilities when combined with modern technology and a wry sense of humor. Ben Lamar Gay fuses folk and folklore, hip hop and pop, jazz and utter weirdness into something extraordinary. Nick Zanca is an artist from New York who has done a lot of work in the dance and alt pop worlds, but his latest release is a fusion of field recording and artfully used electronics. And Lea Bertucci is a New York-based reed player and composer whose work is a thoughtful combination of the acoustic properties of both her instruments and the environments in which they are played.
