In 1963, Terry Riley created his revolutionary Time-Lag Accumulator, a tape delay/feedback system with 2 Revox tape recorders, which revolutionized musical looping and altered the course of live and recorded music forever. Since then, looping in music has become quite ubiquitous and can be found in almost every musical genre.
This program includes an excerpt from an all night concert entitled Purple Modal Strobe Ecstasy with the Daughters of Destruction — All Night Flight, at SUNY, in Buffalo, New York, on March 22, 1968.
The other featured work is Part 1 of Rhys Chatham’s 2016 solo album, Pythagorean Dream, which is constructed from overdubs of tape-delayed trumpet, flutes, and guitar, all played by Chatham himself.
