Program 517: French Spectralism

French Spectralism is a movement which began in the latter-half of the 20th century that, in many ways, has revolutionized the way composers deal with timbre. Join us as we listen to Tristan Murail’s Tellur for solo guitar, performed by the Swedish guitarist Stefan Östersjö. We also will get to hear the first two movements from Gérard Grisey’s masterwork, Les Espaces Acoustiques. The first movement, “Prologue,” will be performed by Garth Knox on viola, and the Asko Ensemble will perform the second movement, “Periods.” Lastly, we will hear from Philippe Hurel with his Tombeau in Memoriam Gérard Grisey for Piano and Percussion, performed by Jean Geoffroy and Jean-Marie Cottet.
