Program 662: Hammers & Mallets

In this edition of Music From Other Minds, we’re reaching back into our music library to bring you works for percussion by some of the classic composers from the American experimental tradition. And we’ll play some complimentary work from composers from Korea, Japan and France. Compositions by Harry Partch, Lou Harrison, Steve Reich and Henry Cowell will be featured. We’ll also hear some work for piano, and I suppose one could make the case that a piano is a percussion instrument too, as the keys struck by a players fingers activate hammers that hit the strings on the inside of the instrument. We’ll also hear some Balinese Gamelan from Gamelan Semar Pegulingan, and a work composed for Korean instruments by Korean composer Hyo-Shin Na. We’ll play a piece for solo marimba by Japanese composer Toshi Ichiyanagi, and a piece for solo piano by another Japanese composer, Toru Takemitsu. In the second half of the program, there will be a long work that features a piano but defies description by French composer Luc Ferrari. And we’ll end with a couple of movements from the Third Coast Percussion ensemble’s 2017 recording of Philippe Manoury’s Le livre des claviers (1987), The Book of Keyboards in English.
