Bela Viro, Transcenda Komponisto *

by Conductor Dennis Russell Davies (1991)

Most performing musicians dread the inevitable question from tongue-tied admirers or unimaginative interviewers: “Who is your favorite composer?” What is really meant could be better phrased “What is your favorite music?” or “Which music do you enjoy hearing or performing the most?” That a composer, even more a favorite composer, be actually a living one, a vital and vibrant contributor to his society, a personal friend and supporter of other artists, as well as a recognized and beloved public figure, regrettably does not fit the patterns of public concert life in the last decade of the twentieth century. One of my favorite composers, however, fits the above description perfectly. As he approaches his seventy-fifth year, Lou Harrison has become indisputably a giant figure on the American musical landscape.

I have personally experienced the enthusiastic and emotional response to his symphonic works from large, traditional audiences at Boston’s Symphony Hall, the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Music Hall in Cincinnati, as well as from thousands at Ravinia cheering the composer after a Chicago Symphony performance of the Third Symphony. I have seen the respect and interest with which some of our leading symphony musicians have responded to Lou Harrison’s work, and in Paris Stuttgart, Bonn, Frankfurt, and Saarbrucken the audience and professional reaction has been similar to that in the United States.

The aforementioned places where I have performed Lou Harrison’s music represent only a small part of the globe where his work is known and admired. From Tokyo to Jakarta, from Auckland to Seoul, he and his music have been unusually well-received, and the influences and stimulation from this most personal cultural exchange has been unusually fruitful in both directions. If the idea of a “World Music” has become increasingly realistic, the Lou Harrison is an original world musician.

It is doubtful that any American composer alive today enjoys more universal respect and affection from his peers than does Lou Harrison. As a teacher, advisor, friend and often parental figure, he has helped and guided countless numbers of composers and performers, including this writer. His friendship and that of his life-companion William Colvig have played a central role in my personal development as well as my development as a musician.

In addition to being a composer of impressive scope and dazzling virtuosity, Lou Harrison is for many of us a direct connection to our national musical birthright. A friend and supporter of “Mr. Ives” (as he still refers to North America’s first great composer), a student of Arnold Schoenberg, a friend and colleague to Henry Cowell, John Cage, Virgil Thomson, Harry Partch, and Aaron Copland, he is one of the pivotal figures of American music who for nearly sixty years has made important contributions to American culture not only as a composer, but also as a conductor, pianist, teacher, writer, and philosopher.

The words which describe the man, his generosity, wit, curiosity, discipline, patience, and rigorous intellectual grasp of form and tradition are the same ones which i would use to describe his music. Therein, I think, lies the key to understanding this most complex, profound, and unusual artist and his work–it’s all of a piece.

We’ll hear Harrison’s music alongside that of Natacha Diels whose work, like Harrison’s, is steeped in a sense of ritual; Gity Razaz who fearlessly combines technologies and cultures, the prolific; and eloquent Jimmy Lopez, and the playfully absurd Annie Gosfield. A CONCERT WITH SHADOWS: WORLD PREMIERE OF LOU HARRISON’S CINNA AS A SHADOW PLAY

Thursday, May 18, 2017, 8:00 pm
Center for New Music, San Francisco
55 Taylor, San Francisco, CA 94102

In 1957, Lou Harrison was inspired to write incidental music for a 17th century French play, Cinna, by Pierre Corneille. The play is a grand political intrigue, set at the beginning of the Roman Empire, dealing with loyalty, revenge and forgiveness. Although he intended for it to be performed with puppets, the performance didn’t materialize in his lifetime. Working with pianist Linda Burman-Hall, shadow master Larry Reed will bring Harrison’s vision to life, utilizing new types of Romanesque shadow figures inspired by Harrison’s rod puppet designs. The play will be condensed to its essence to create a unique and enriching evening, weaving music, language and shadows together seamlessly.
